I shot this picture in October 2009, Dorian Concept and myself were playing longside Lukid for an event called FFWD at the Nijdrop in Opwijk, a village close to the capital. The old building was next to a huge hangar with carnival défilé cars.

Here’s the video I did back then.

FFWD Info

The year is 1994, the album was called “Everything is Everything” and came out on Elektra Records. You know I’m talking about Brand Nubian, a group composed of Lord Jamar and Sadat X (and Grand Puba originally). They had their first album release back in 1990 with “One For All”, that’s how I got introduced to the group (I was 14, watching Yo! MTV Raps) and then came “In God We Trust”.

Today, I still like to listen to this hit called “Hold On”, it uses the sample of Simply Red’s “Holding Back The Years”. Both songs are timeless hits for me.

And I will take this weekend off to take it easy, and celebrate on monday the release of our compilation (LeFtO & Simbad Presents Worldwide Family Vol.1) on Brownswood’s official date - January 3rd.

I’ve seen her everywhere this year, opened a show for her, her “Born Free“ video is one of the best videos I’ve seen this year and here she is again…

M.I.A. (or was it Diplo?) has released (or leaked) a mixtape with unreleased demo-tracks. And you might want to download it too. It’s over here:

Don’t you know you’re Life itself, Like a leaf clings To a tree, Oh my darling Cling to me, For we’re creatures Of the wind, And wild is the wind, So wild is the wind

Wild Is The Wind” is such a beautiful song by Nina Simone. And what to say about this naked photo of the high priestess herself...

To fall in Love… David Kennedy aka Ramadanman/Pearson Sound flipped M.I.A.’s “It Takes A Muscle”. Once again, in his true style (808 sounds) he gives the track a serious facelift and I can’t wait to drop this one in the club, serious basslines.

Born Free

Hell Yeah, I’m not afraid to say Peven Everett is my favorite “present” soulsinger. It’s a shame he’s so under rated, there’s nobody shining like Peven on stage right now. There’s so much music out there from the man I don’t even know where to start. Going through Jazz, R&B, House, HipHop, this man does it all and always topnotch.

I hope to see him perform in 2011 in Belgium, if not, I might do it myself.

“Belgian DJ LeFtO has easily been one of the best selectors of the year. Sweeping through a variety of eclectic styles, from Hip Hop to Dubstep, it’s no surprise that his end of year wrap-up is a treat to the ears. Superb.” - Rough Trade Shops

Apparently my Best of 2010 mix was picked by the infamous Rough Trade Shops as one of their 3 picks from Mixcloud to listen to for New Year’s Eve! Well, that’s a great New Year’s gift, thank you guys. I always stop by the shop when I’m in London as Simbad’s studio is 2 minutes away, great shop, and remembers me of the Music Mania vibe.

"New year, New beard…"
December 28, 2010

It’s almost 2011 and therefore I just wanted to do something I haven’t done for at least 7 years. Yes, I shaved my beard and feel totally naked now. Here are the before and after pictures, honestly, I can’t wait to get my beard back. I already miss you beard…

Back in November Theophilus London was in town; opening for Mark Ronson at the Ancienne Belgique venue, Brussels. Theophilus asked me if I’d be down to deejay for him, and who am I to say no to an artist I like.

These photos were taken by Kmeron, great photographer based in Brussels.

Out on Soundway, The Sound of Siam offers a unique vantage point to the most experimental period in Thai musical history. From Thai classical to Luk Krung and Luk Thung, it’s music that incorporated western influences such as jazz, surf guitar, ballroom and even Latin and African.

This is Thai music made between 1964 and 1975 and it’s definitely worth buying it. One of my favorite compilations this year with some incredible songs like “Ding Ding Dong” by Waipod Phetsuphan.

Yes Brussels, it’s cold out there…

One of my favorite Wu-Tang Clan rappers drops his ninth album; honestly, Ghostface is probably one of the most consistent rappers from the Clan, and always dropping good or at least decent albums. This one is no different, it might be one of my favorite Ghost’ albums since “Ironman” and “Supreme Clientele”. The energy is there and the soul samples in the beats are almost a trademark now.

It’s not his best album, but it might be his 3rd best…

“2getha Baby” is a sick tune.
